The paintings are a city map of Athens. The center, where I put the blood and moved it with my nails, is the Acropolis. From there on, the blood found its way on the canvas. The golden mothers and kittens, I painted with my nails. The mother cats and kittens of the paintings are the cats that I feed and film.I was looking at the videos of the cats I made and I was painting them.
The process of painting on the canvas is simultaneously traditional and contemporary. I use oil colours, and like in classic paintings, I use gold. I mix the color gold with my menstrual blood. I also like to play with the symbolism of Blood in the church, the blood of Christ as a sacrifice of love. Somehow I imagine that painting with menstrual blood feels like a baby who recently died. A baby that was never born. That I will never have. Part of me wants to have more babies but after the trauma that I have lived with my daughter, I don’t want to experience such pain again.
Menstruation is painful. It makes you realize that you are a human being, trapped in a body, ruled by the cycles of life. It reminds me of my own mortality. But the pain also makes me feel more alive and more conscious about my body.
